Exercise 1 Page 743

To start solving, estimate the percentages displayed on the bar graph.

94 %

Practice makes perfect

We have been given a bar graph that represents the weights of a population of female brown bears.

We have been told that the weights of bears are normally distributed with a mean of 115 kg. We will find the approximate percentage of bears whose weight is at least 100 kg. To find the percentage, we will shade the percent of data which is at least 100 kg.

Finally, we can find the percentage of bears by adding the percentages of the shaded areas.
p=23 %+42 %+23 %+5 %+1 %
p=94 %
The percentage of female bears, who weigh at least 100 kg, is 94 %.
