Exercise 49 Page 155

You can solve for the variable by using cross products.

-1

Practice makes perfect

To solve the proportion, we will start by using cross products. Remember that we will need to treat 2c-3 and 7c+4 as single quantities in the cross multiplication process.

5/2c-3=3/7c+4
5(7c+4)=3(2c-3)
35c+20=6c-9
35c+20-6c=6c-9-6c
29c+20=-9
29c+20-20=-9-20
29c=-29
29c/29=-29/29
c=-1

When c=-1, the ratios are proportional.
