Exercise 15 Page 761

There are three different sampling methods, which are random, systematic, and stratified. What are their differences?

Sampling Method: Systematic.
Sample Quality: Not good.
Explanation: See solution.

Practice makes perfect
Let's consider the given situation.

A software business e-mails every thousandth name on an e-mail list to find out what software the people are using.

Now, let's consider the different sampling methods.

Name Sampling Method
Random Survey a population at random.
Systematic Select a number n at random. Then survey every nth person.
Stratified Separate a population into smaller groups, each with a certain characteristic. Then survey at random within each group.

Since a software business e-mails every thousandth name on an e-mail list to find out what software the people are using, a systematic sampling method is used. This will not produce a good sample because we do not know who will receive the e-mail and whether it will be replied.
