Sometimes, subtracting decimals can be intimidating. However, let's look at this number as if it was not a decimal value. If we think about the numbers as 97 and 86 instead, we can do the mental math. 97-86=11 As long as we keep track of the number of decimal places, we can always perform mental math in this way. &9.7_(1 decimal)-8.6_(1decimal)=1.1_(1 decimal place) Note that the number of decimal places in the answer depends on the type of operation being performed.
