Exercise 22 Page 1

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

157/15

Before we can evaluate a sum or difference involving mixed numbers, the mixed numbers must first be rewritten as fractions.

a bc a* c+b/c Simplify
6 23 6* 3+2/3 20/3
3 45 3* 5+4/5 19/5
In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 20/3 + 19/5 Since 3 is not a multiple of 5, we have to multiply both the numerator and denominator of 203 by 5 and 195 by 3, to create a common denominator.
20/3 + 19/5
20 * 5/3 * 5 + 19/5
20 * 5/3 * 5 + 19 * 3/5 * 3
100/15 + 57/15
Now that we have a common denominator, we can proceed to simplifying the expression.
100/15 + 57/15
157/15
