Exercise 1 Page 564

How can a line be named?

Example Solution: XY

Practice makes perfect

Let's start by reviewing basic geometric concepts.

Concept Definition
Point It is a location with no shape or size. It is usually named by a capital letter.
Line It is made up of points and does not have thickness or width. Through any two points we can draw exactly one line.
Plane It is a flat surface made up of points and it extends infinitely in all directions. Three noncollinear points form exactly one plane.
With these definitions in mind let's take a look at the given figure. We are asked to name a line that contains point X.

A line can be named by a lowercase script letter or by the letters of two points on the line. Let's look at X and the line on which it lies.

Thus, we can name this line in a few different ways. XY, YR, XR, YX, RY, RX, m
