Exercise 1 Page 12

We want to evaluate the following expression. 9^2

The expression 9^2, or 9 squared, means that we need to multiply 9 by itself. 9^2=9* 9 This means that the power can be rewritten as a multiplication of the number by itself. The value of the power will tells us how many times we need to multiply the number by itself. We want to calculate the expression. To do so, we can type either 9^2 or 9* 9 in the calculator. Both expressions give us the same answer.

The Order of Operations
The order of operations is a very important set of guidelines that tell us how to simplify numeric expressions in a reliable, consistent manner. This way we will always be confident that we have done things correctly. One common way to remember the order of operations is using the phrase Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally which is a mnemonic device for PEMDAS.
