When solving r=ax+b, we can treat each side of the equation as a line on a coordinate plane.

We are looking for x, such that ax+b is equal to r. Therefore, we are searching for the point of intersection of the lines y=r and y=ax+b. Searching for the point of intersection of two lines is the same as solving a system of equations. y=r y=ax+b The x-coordinate of the solution is the solution of r=ax+b, which is what we are looking for!
