Exercise 1 Page 309

When is a compound statement which is connected with the word or true?

true

Practice makes perfect

We have a histogram that shows ratings of top 20 movies between the years 2005 and 2008.

We will identify whether the given compound statement is true.

Most top 20 movies in 2007 we rated PG-13 or most top 20 movies in 2005 were rated G.

This compound statement is connected with the word or. Therefore, it will be true if at least one of the simple statements is true. Let's check it! The first statement says that most top 20 movies in 2007 were rated PG-13. By analyzing the graph we can see if this is true. We have the following information about the movie ratings in 2007. G:& 1movie PG:& 5movies PG-13:& 11movies R:& 3movies Most of the movies in 2007 were, indeed, rated PG-13. Therefore, the whole compound statement is true!

Checking Second Statement

We can also check if the second statement is true by analzing the graph. The second statement says that most top 20 movies in 2005 were rated G. We have the following information about the movie ratings in 2005. G:& 1movie PG:& 4movies PG-13:& 13movies R:& 2movies Most of the movies in 2005 were rated PG-13. Therefore, the second statement is false!
