Exercise 1 Page 81

The word equals divides the sentence into what should be on the left-hand side and what should be on the right-hand side of the equation.

15-3r=6

Practice makes perfect
Every equation has an equals sign and then values or expressions on either side of it. Key phrases such as is, is equal to, and equals tell us about the placement of the equals sign. Three timesrless than15 = 6.

On the left-hand side, we have two key phrases: times and less than. These phrases tell us the operations that will be used in our equation. Times indicates multiplication, while less than indicates subtraction. Three times r less than15 15 - 3 r On the right-hand side we have only 6, so we can now complete the equation. 15 - 3 r = 6
