Practice makes perfect
a

We are told that a plane flies 1250 kilometers at an average speed of 540 miles per hour. We want to find the number of hours needed to make this trip. To do so we will first find the average speed in kilometers per hour using a conversion factor.

1.609 km/1 miMultiplying 540 miles per hour by this conversion factor will convert it to kilometers per hour. 540 mi/1 h * 1.609 km/1 mi Having the average speed in kilometers per hour, we can find the number of hours to make the trip. To do so we will divide the total distance by the average speed. Let's do it! . 1250km/1 /( 540 mi/1 h. * 1.609 km/1 mi) ⇓ 1250km/1 * 1 h/540 mi * 1 mi/1.609 km Great! We wrote the product to find the the number of hours it took for the plane to make the trip.

b

We are asked to calculate the product that we found in Part A. Let's do it!

1250km/1 * 1 h/540 mi * 1 mi/1.609 km
1250 km * 1 h* 1 mi/1 * 540 mi * 1.609 km
1250 km * 1 h* 1 mi/1 * 540 mi * 1.609 km
1250 * 1 h* 1/1 * 540 * 1.609
1250 h/540 * 1.609
1.438666 ... h
≈ 1.4 h

We found that making the trip took about 1.4 hours for the plane.
