To identify which variable is independent and which is dependent, we need to ask, which variable causes a change in the other variable?

Since we know that time on Earth is always moving forward at the same rate, and nothing can affect it, time is the independent variable. However, the sales made depend on the amount of time that passes, so the value of sales is the dependent variable.
