Population Proportion

Population proportion describes the fraction or percentage of a population that has a certain characteristic. It is the count of individuals or items with a specific characteristic X divided by the size of the population N. This proportion is usually denoted as p.

p =X/N

In practice, population proportion is usually estimated using a sample proportion. Note that population proportion helps measure how common a characteristic is in a population. It is especially useful for tracking changes in a population over time or comparing different populations.
