Exercise 1 Page 12

Find the corresponding unit prices for the given rates.

Music Place

Practice makes perfect

We know that CD Express offers 4 CDs for $ 60, and Music Place offers 6 CDs for $ 75. We want to determine which store offers the better buy. To do so, we can find the unit price for each store so that we can compare them. Recall that a unit price is a unit rate that gives the price of one item. In this case, we are looking for the unit price of CDs for each store.

We need to find equivalent rates with denominators of 1 to find each of the unit prices. Let's start with the first rate!
60/4
60/ 4/4/ 4
15/1
Now let's find the unit price for the second rate.
75/6
75/ 6/6/ 6
12.5/1
Finally, we need to compare the rates. cc CD Express & Music Place [0.5em] $ 60/4CDs=$ 15/1CD & $ 75/6CDs=$ 12.50/1CD Because $ 12.50 is less than $ 15, Music Place offers the better buy.
