Exercise 8 Page 230

Which variable causes a change in the other variable?

Independent Variable: Amount of minutes,m
Dependent Variable: Gallons of water,g

Practice makes perfect
To identify which variable is independent and which is dependent, we need to analyze which variable causes a change in the other.
  • Independent Variable: Causes change in the dependent variable.
  • Dependent Variable: Changes because of the independent variable.

Running the garden hose for more minutes causes the number of gallons of water produced to grow. In other words, the number of gallons produced depends on how many minutes the garden hose is running for. Therefore, the amount of minutes m is the independent variable, and the number of gallons of water g is the dependent variable.
