Exercise 53 Page 92

Practice makes perfect
We want to find the value of the given expression. - 5+ 3.25 In this case, we want to add -5 and 3.25. Let's use the number line and draw an arrow from 0 to -5.

Next we will draw an arrow 3.25 units to the right to represent adding 3.25.

The sum of these two numbers is - 1.75. When we add a positive number to a negative number we first move to the left and then to the right on a number line.

Alternative Solution

Alternative Solution
Let's perform the addition.

- 5+3.25
3.25+(- 5)
3.25-5
- 1.75

We want to find the value of the given expression. 3.18+( - 7) In this case, we want to add -7 to 3.18. Again we will use the number line to find this sum. To do this, we should first draw an arrow from 0 to 3.18.

Then we should draw an arrow 7 units to the left to represent adding -7. Notice that in case of negative numbers, the length of an arrow is the absolute value of the number we want to add.

These two numbers add up to - 3.82. When we add a negative number to a positive number we first move to the right and then to the left on a number line.

Alternative Solution

Alternative Solution
Let's perform the addition.

3.18+(- 7)
3.18-7
- 3.82
