Exercise 9 Page 312

Label the vertical axis as the speed and the horizontal axis as the time.

Example Graph:

We want to sketch a graph that represents the given situation. Let's start by drawing the axes. We will label the vertical axis as the speed and the horizontal axis as the time.

The initial point will be the origin because our speed is zero at the start of the race. Now let's analyze the first part of the situation. You begin the race by increasing your speed at a constant rate.

Since the speed increases at a constant rate, this part of the race can represented as a straight, increasing line segment starting at the origin.

Now let's look at the next part of the situation. You then run at a constant speed until you get a cramp and have to stop. Since the speed is constant over time, we can sketch it as a horizontal line segment.

Next we have the following situation. You wait until your cramp goes away before you start increasing your speed again at a constan rate. Since we are not moving during the time of the cramp, our speed is equal to zero. This can be represented as a horizontal line over the x-axis until we start running again. The increase of the speed can be sketched as another increasing line segment from the x-axis.

Be aware that this is only one possible example because the graph can be drawn in any number of ways that meet the conditions of the problem.
