Exercise 4 Page 229

What is the Elimination Method of solving systems of equations?

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

The Elimination Method of solving systems of equations uses the Addition and Subtraction Properties of Equality.

Addition Property of Equality If a=b, then a+c=b+c.
Subtraction Property of Equality If a=b, then a−c=b−c.

Since the sides of an equality are always equal, we can add or subtract left- and right-hand sides of multiple equations separately to reduce the number of equations in our system. Therefore, we need to the manipulate coefficients of variables in at least one equation to cancel out after addition or subtraction. Usually we eliminate variables until there is only one equation left.
