Practice makes perfect

A system of equations can be solved by using a graphing calculator. Before we can do that, we have to rewrite both equations in slope-intercept form by isolating the y-variable terms on one side.

3x-2y=2 & (I) 2x-y=2 & (II)
(I), (II): Solve for y
- 2y=- 3x + 2 2x-y=2
y= 32x - 1 2x-y=2
y= 32x - 1 - y=- 2x+2
y= 32x - 1 y=2x-2

Now we can enter the equations into the calculator. To do so, we press the button Y= and then write the equations on the two first rows.

Having entered the equations, we can plot them by pressing GRAPH.

Next, to find the point of intersection, we push 2nd and CALC, then choose the fifth option, intersect.

We see the graph again. Now we have to select the first and second curve before guessing where the point of intersection is. Make sure to place the cursor as close as possible to the point of intersection.

The solution to the system of equations is (2,2).
