Exercise 2 Page 125

What does x represent in f(x)?

Your height at age 14.

Practice makes perfect

When a function is written in function notation and x is the input, f(x) represents the output of the function at x. ccc Equation & & Function Notation [1ex] y=-5x+4 & & f(x) = -5x+4 Here we have a function h that represents your height. This means that h(x) represents your height at age x, where age is the input and height is the output. f(age)=height As such, h(14) represents your height at the age of 14 because 14 is the input, age, and h(14) represents your height dependent on age.
