Exercise 2 Page 608

The mean is the mathematical average. The median is the middle value. The mode is the most repeated value.

Mean: 1314.8889
Median: 1191
Mode: 1000
Best Measure of Center: See solution.

Practice makes perfect

We want to find the mean, median and mode of the given data set, as well as determine which of them best represents the given data.

Mean

The mean of a data set is the sum of the values divided by the total number of values in the set. Let's start by calculating the sum of the given values. 1000+1267+1328+1200+1180+ 1000+2568+1191+1100 = 11 834 There are 9 values in our set, so we have to divide the sum by 9.

Mean: 11 834/9=1314.8889

Median

When the data are arranged in numerical order, the median is the middle value — or the mean of the two middle values — in a set of data. Let's arrange the given values and find the median. 1000, 1000, 1100, 1180, 1191, 1200, 1267, 1328, 2568 The median of this set is 1191. Median: 1191

Mode

The mode is the value or values that appear most often in a set of data. Let's find the mode of the given values. 1000, 1267, 1328, 1200, 1180, 1000, 2568, 1191, 1100 The value that appears most often is 1000. Mode: 1000

Best Measure of Center

The median best represents the given data set because there are exactly as many values less than and greater than the median. All values are greater than or equal to the mode. There are only 2 values greater than the mean and all others are less than or equal to the mean. Therefore, both mode and mean are worse representations of the data than the median.
