4. Solving Multi-Step Inequalities
Sign In
What can you do to isolate a variable in an inequality?
y>-20
We can solve inequalities in almost the same way as equations. The only difference is that we need to remember to flip the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative value.
This inequality tells us that all values greater than -20 will satisfy the inequality.
| y | y/5>-4 | Simplify | True or False? |
|---|---|---|---|
| - 25 | - 25/5? >-4 | - 5≯ - 4 | False |
| - 20 | - 20/5? >-4 | - 4≯- 4 | False |
| - 15 | - 15/5? >-4 | - 3 > - 4 | True |
Notice how the values greater than - 20 make the inequality true.
