4. Solving Multi-Step Inequalities
Sign In
What can you do to isolate a variable in an inequality?
y≥-8
We can solve inequalities in almost the same way as equations. The only difference is that we need to remember to flip the inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative value.
This inequality tells us that all values greater than or equal to -8 will satisfy the inequality.
| y | -24≤3y | Simplify | True or False? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | -24? ≤3( 2) | -24≤6 | True |
| -8 | -24? ≤3( -8) | -24≤ - 24 | True |
| -10 | -24? ≤3( -10) | -24≰-30 | False |
Notice how the values greater than or equal to - 8 make the inequality true.
