To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side using the Properties of Equality. In this case, the variables are already on the left-hand side of the equation, so we will start by combining like terms and then isolating y-term.

7-y-y= - 1

Subtract term

7-2y=- 1

LHS-7=RHS-7

7-2y-7=- 1-7

Subtract terms

- 2y = - 8

.LHS /(- 2).=.RHS /(- 2).

y=4

The solution to the equation is y=4. We can check our solution by substituting it into the original equation.

7-y-y= - 1

y= 4

7- 4 - 4 ? = - 1

Subtract terms

- 1 = - 1
