To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side and all of the constant terms on the other, using the Properties of Equality. In this case, we start by dividing both sides of the equation by 6.

6y=12.8
6y/6=12.8/6
y=12.8/6
y=128/60
y=32/15

y = 30 + 2/15
y = 30/15 + 2/15
y = 2 + 2/15
y = 2 215

Notice that we didn't divide 32 by 15 because we would receive a repeating decimal. Now, to check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute y=2 215 into the original equation.

6y=12.8
6* 2 215? =12.8
6*32/15? =12.8
6* 32/15? =12.8
2* 32/5? =12.8
64/5? =12.8
12.8=12.8

Since the left-hand side is equal to the right-hand side, our solution is correct.
