Exercise 47 Page 782

The odds of an event occurring is a different ratio than the probability of the event occurring.

F

Practice makes perfect

When calculating probability, you are comparing the number of positive outcomes to the number of possible outcomes. Calculating the odds O of an event occurring, however, is the ratio of positive outcomes to negative outcomes. O=Positive Outcomes/Negative OutcomesWe want to draw a green or a yellow marble. Since there are 2 green and 3 yellow marbles, there are 2+3 positive outcomes. The number of negative outcomes is the number red marbles. Positive:&2green + 3yellow marbles Negative:& 4red marbles Let's form our ratio and then simplify it as much as possible.

O=Positive Outcomes/Negative Outcomes
O=2+3/4
O=5/4

The odds against selecting a green or yellow marble from a bag are 54, which can also be written as 5:4. This corresponds to option F.
