Exercise 33 Page 751

Start with finding the equation of the trend line.

Graph:

Predicted number of tenpin bowling establishments: 4650

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to plot a scatter plot of the data, draw a trend line and find its equation.

Observing the Graph

By treating the table as a set of points, we can graph the given data as a scatter plot.

Let's draw a line of fit, or trend line. To do so, we will draw a line that appears to fit the data closely.

Equation for the Line of Fit

To write an equation for the line of fit we determined above, we first need to use two points on the line to find its slope. Let's use (2002,5973) and (2006,5566) in the Slope Formula.

m = y_2-y_1/x_2-x_1
m=5566- 5973/2006- 2002
â–¼
Evaluate right-hand side
m=- 407/4
m=-407/4
m=- 101.75

Now that we have the slope m= -101.75, let's use the point ( 2002, 5973) in the point-slope form to write and simplify an equation for our line of fit.

y-y_1=m(x-x_1)
y- 5973= -101.75(x- 2002)
â–¼
Simplify
y - 5973 = - 101.75x + 203 703.5
y = - 101.75x + 209 676.5

Calculating the Projected Value

To calculate the expected output at a given input, we can substitute the value into our equation of fit. In this case, we will substitute year 2015 for x in our equation and solve for y.

y = - 101.75x + 209 676.5
y = - 101.75 ( 2015) + 209 676.5
y = - 205 026.25 + 209 676.5
y = 4650.25
y = 4650

The expected number of tenpit bowling establishments in 2015 is 4650.
