Exercise 8 Page 611

Find the closest perfect square to the radicand.

14

Practice makes perfect

A perfect square is a number that can be written with an exponent of 2, where the square root is a whole number. sqrt(a^2)=a, for any non-negative numberaTo estimate sqrt(197) to the nearest integer, let's narrow down our estimate by looking at nearby perfect squares. The two nearest perfect squares are 196 and 225.

196<197<225
sqrt(196)
14

We know that sqrt(197) is somewhere between 14 and 15. In order to estimate it to the nearest whole number, we have to know which perfect square is closer. We will do this by finding the difference between 196 and 197, and 197 and 225. 196-1 ←197+28 →225 We found that 197 is closer to 196 than to 225. Therefore, sqrt(197) is closer to sqrt(196) than to sqrt(225). This means that the value of sqrt(197), to the nearest whole number, is 14.
