Exercise 45 Page 9

To add or subtract fractions, they need to have the same denominator.

3/4

Practice makes perfect

When adding or subtracting fractions, they should have the same denominator. In this exercise, we have two fractions with different denominators. 1/4 + 1/2Since 4 is a multiple of 2, we can multiply both the numerator and denominator of 12 by 2 to create a common denominator.

1/4+1/2
1/4+1*2/2*2
1/4+2/4

Now that the fractions have the same denominator, they can be added.

1/4+2/4
1+2/4
3/4

The sum of the fractions is 34.
