According to the order of operations, expressions inside parentheses are evaluated first, while addition and subtraction are evaluated last. For the given exercise, this means the exponent first, the product and division next, and finally, the sum of their results.

Multiply	5 * 4 ÷ 2 + 8	20 ÷ 2 + 8
Calculate quotient	20 ÷ 2 + 8	10 + 8
Add terms	10 + 8	18

The expression equals 18.
