Exercise 92 Page 72

Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.

Between 12 and 13

Practice makes perfect

We want to use a table to estimate the solution of the given equation. 3m-13=24 In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 3m=24. What multiplied by 3 would get us close to 24? The value 8 gives 24 precisely, so let's try that in our table. From there, we will keep testing until we get the result we want or very close.

m 3m-13 = Result
8 3( 8)-13 11 Not even close
10 3( 10)-13 17 Right direction, but still pretty far
12 3( 12)-13 23 Very close!
13 3( 13)-13 26 A little too far

Since 12 got us very close to 24 and 13 took the result slightly too far, we know that the solution is between 12 and 13.
