Exercise 17 Page 527

If a quadrilateral is a trapezoid, then the length of the midsegment is half the sum of the lengths of the bases.

Practice makes perfect

We will find the length of the midsegment VS.

Recall the Trapezoid Midsegment Theorem.

Trapezoid Midsegment Theorem

The midsegment of a trapezoid is parallel to each base and its measure is one half the sum of the lengths of the bases.

Using the theorem, we can write the following equation. VS= 1/2 ( UT+ QR) Let's find the length of VS, by solving the equation.
VS=1/2 (UT+QR)
Solve for VS
VS=1/2( 16+ 4)
VS=1/2(20)
VS=1* 20/2
VS=20/2
VS=10
We found that midsegment VS=10.
