Remember that if one angle of a triangle has a greater measure than another angle, then the side opposite the greater angle is longer than the side opposite the lesser angle.

In any right triangle, the right angle is the one with the greatest measure. Therefore, the opposite side to the right angle must be the longest side. This is why the hypotenuse is always the longest side of the triangle.
