Exercise 33 Page 914

Practice makes perfect
a We are given a Venn diagram that shows what 150 students want to do in their free time.

We are asked to find the number of students that like going to movies or shopping. To do that, let's focus only on the circles that represent shopping or movies.

Let's sum up the values in range of those circles. 20+ 3+10+4+ 75+ 5=117 We found that 117 students like going to the movies or shopping.

b In this part we need to find an activity which was mentioned by exactly 37 students. To do that, we can calculate the numbers of students which mentioned each activity. Let's start with sports.
Let's sum the numbers in range of this circle. 3+ 4+ 5+ 25=37 âś“

Sports was mentioned by 37 students! Let's see how many students mentioned movies.

Similarly, let's sum the numbers in range of the movies circle. 10+ 4+ 5+ 75=94 Movies were mention by 94 students. Finally, let's check shopping.

Finally, let's sum the numbers in range of the shopping circle. 20+ 10+ 4+ 3=37 âś“ Shopping was mentioned by 37 students! Therefore, both shopping and sports were mentioned by exactly 37 students

c We are asked to find the number of students that did not say that they liked movies. To do that, we need to look at every number that is not in range of the movies circle.

Let's sum all the number that are not in range of the movies circle. 20+ 3+ 25+ 8=56 We found that 56 students did not say that they like movies.
