Exercise 48 Page 722

When you draw a line and a circle, do they necessarily intersect each other? When they do, in how many points do they do so? Recall the special segments defined on a circle.

See solution.

Practice makes perfect

When we draw a circle and a line in the same plane, we can have three different situations.

  1. The line intersects the circle in exactly two points.
    1. The line intersects the circle at only one point.
    2. The line does not intersect the circle.

There are also three special segments within a circle. A radius, which is a segment with endpoints at the center of the circle and on the circle; a chord, which is a segment whose endpoints are on the circle; and a diameter, which is a chord that passes through the center of the circle.
