Exercise 16 Page 644

Start by drawing a diagram to illustrate the situation.

6sqrt(2)cm or 8.5cm

Practice makes perfect

We are told that a 45^(∘)-45^(∘)-90^(∘) triangle has a leg length of 6cm and we want to find the length of its hypotenuse. To do so, we will start by drawing a diagram to illustrate the situation. Let x be the length of the hypotenuse.

In a 45^(∘)-45^(∘)-90^(∘) triangle, the legs are congruent and the hypotenuse is sqrt(2) times the length of a leg. With this information, we can find the value of x. x= sqrt(2) * 6cm ⇔ x=6sqrt(2)cm We have that the length of the hypotenuse of our triangle is 6sqrt(2)cm, which is about 8.5cm.
