Exercise 18 Page 340

To determine the consecutive integer values, make a table of values.

Between x=- 1 and x=0 and between x=1 and x=2

Practice makes perfect

Even-degree functions will always have an even number of real zeros, or no real zeros at all. The degree of our function is 2, so it will have either 2 or no real zeros. Instead of using a graph, we can use the table to locate a zeros.

x f(x)=3x^2-3x-1
-1 5
0 - 1
1 - 1
2 5

The changes in the sign of f(x) indicate that there are zeros between x=- 1 and x=0 and between x=1 and x=2.
