To solve an equation, we should first gather all of the variable terms on one side of the equation and all of the constant terms on the other side, using the Properties of Equality. In this case, we need to start by using the Addition Property of Equality to isolate -6y.

-6y-8=16
-6y-8+8=16+8
-6y=24
Now we can fully isolate y using Division Property of Equality.

-6y=24
-6y/-6=24/-6
y=-4

The solution to the equation is y=-4. We can check our solution by substituting it into the original equation.

-6y-8=16
-6( -4)-8 ? = 16
