Exercise 11 Page 22

Use the Multiplication Property of Equality to eliminate the minus sign.

y=-8

Practice makes perfect

To solve the equation, we have to isolate y on one side. Using the Multiplication Property of Equality, we will multiply both sides by -1. This will eliminate the minus sign and isolate y.

- y=8
(-1) - y= (-1) 8
y=(-1)8
y=-8

To check that this solution is correct, substitute y=-8 into the original equation and simplify.

- y=8
-( -8)? =8
8=8

Since the left-hand side and right-hand side are equal, y=-8 is the correct solution.
