What operations do "the product of" and "the sum of" represent?

12[x+(-3)]

Practice makes perfect
The first key phrase is "the product of ... and ..." This indicates that we should multiply two things. ... * ... The two terms that we are multiplying are: "12" and "the sum of ... and ... ". This is the second key phrase that we should multiply 12 by the sum of two things.

12 [... + ...] Things that we are adding are: "a number" and "negative 3". 12[a number+(-3)] The phrase "a number" is indicating an arbitrary number or a variable. If we call this number x, we can complete our expression. the product of 12 and the sum of a number and negative3 12 [ x + ( -3 )] Note that this is only one of multiple ways to algebraically express the given verbal expression.
