We are given the numbers of members in five karate classes. Let's find the mean and the median of this data.

Mean

In order to find the mean, or average, we need to find the sum of members and divide by the number of classes.
Mean=Sum of values/Number of values
Mean=13+12+10+16+19/5
Mean=70/5
Mean=14
The mean of members in the karate class is 14.

Median

The median of a set of data is the middle number, or the average of the two middle numbers, when placed in order from least to greatest. Let's start by writing the numbers in numerical order. 10,12, 13,16,19 Since there is an odd number of classes, the median is the middle number, which is 13.
