Exercise 5 Page 475

Start with making a table of values for x and g(x).

Practice makes perfect

In order to graph the given absolute value function, we can make a table of values.

x g(x)=|x+3|-1 Simplified Absolute Value g(x)
-6 g( -6)=| -6+3|-1 g( -6)=(3)-1 2
-3 g( -3)=| -3+3|-1 g( -3)=(0)-1 -1
0 g( 0)=| 0+3|-1 g( 0)=(3)-1 2
3 g( 3)=| 3+3|-1 g( 3)=(6)-1 5
6 g( 6)=| 6+3|-1 g( 6)=(9)-1 8

Now we can graph g(x) by plotting the points and connecting them with straight lines on either side of the vertex.
