Exercise 2 Page 376

Start with plotting the data on the coordinate plane.

- 0.5

We have been given a table of values.

x y
1 9.6
2 6.3
3 2.8
4 8.73
5 5.9
6 1.2
In order to estimate the correlation coefficient r, we will plot the data on the coordinate plane.

Next, we will draw a line among the points. When drawing a trend line, we want the line to be as close to as many points as possible.

Since the points loosely follow the line with a negative slope, r is between - 1 and 0. Since the correlation is weak, r is closer to - 0.5.
