Exercise 1 Page 736

The sample space of an experiment is the set of all possible outcomes.

HH, HT, TH, TT

Practice makes perfect

We are given an experiment and want to represent the sample space. The sample space of an experiment is the set of all possible outcomes. In this case, the sample space is the result of two stages.

  • First Toss — heads or tails
  • Second Toss — heads or tails

There are several ways to find the sample space. We can make a list, a table, or a tree diagram. We will make a tree diagram. Let's now draw a tree diagram to represent the situation.

The letter H represents heads and the letter T represents tails. We found that the sample space is HH, HT, TH, TT.
