Exercise 21 Page 781

Neither event affects the probability of the other, making them independent events.

3/20

Practice makes perfect

The two events described in this exercise are pulling a card from a stack of 15 and spinning the spinner. Neither of these events affects the probability of the other so these are independent events. If two events are independent, then the probability of both occurring is the product of their individual probabilities. P(AandB)=P(A)* P(B) Here, A is pulling a card with a label that is less than 10 and B is spinning red. Let's start by calculating the probability of pulling a card with a label that is less than 10. P(A)&=9/15 l←number less than10 ←all cards Let's now find the probability of landing on the red section. P(B)&=1/4 l← red sections ←all sections Finally, we multiply P(A) and P(B).

P(AandB)=P(A)* P(B)
P(AandB)= 9/15* 1/4
P(AandB)=3/5*1/4
P(AandB)=3/20
