To solve the equation, we have to isolate x on one side. Using the Addition Property of Equality, we will add 1 to both sides of the equation. This will eliminate the subtraction and isolate x.

x - 1 = - 5

LHS+1=RHS+1

x - 1 + 1= - 5 + 1

Add terms

x = - 4

Let's mark x = - 4 on the number line.
