Exercise 23 Page 401

The perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all sides of the figure.

Linear Expression: 24x + 9
Perimeter for x = 7yd: 177 yards

Practice makes perfect

We want to write an linear expression for the perimeter of the figure from the following diagram.

This figure has 2 sides that are (6x+3) yards long, one (7x+3) yards long, and one 5x yards long. To find the perimeter, we can sum these lengths. 2 (6x+3) + (7x+3) + 5x First, let's distribute 2 into the first set of parentheses.
2(6x+3)+(7x+3)+5x
(2 * 6x + 2 * 3) + (7x+3)+5x
(12x + 6)+ (7x+3)+5x
Now, let's add the above expression. Note that we can write the third linear expression as 5x+0 because adding 0 to an expression does not change its value. & 12x + 6 & + 7x+3 & + 5x + 0 & 24x + 9 The linear expression in a simplest form for the perimeter of the figure is 24+9. Finally, we want to find the value of the perimeter if x is 7 yards. Let's substitute 7 for x into our linear expression and simplify.
24x + 9
24( 7)+9
168 + 9
177
