Exercise 3 Page 398

The perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all sides of the figure.

Linear Expression: 11x+4
Perimeter for x = 3yd: 37 yards

Practice makes perfect

We want to write a linear expression in simplest form for the perimeter of the following pentagon.

This pentagon has 2 sides that are (3x) yards long, 2 sides that are (2x) yards long, and one side that is (x+4) yards long. Therefore, we can write the following formula for the perimeter of our square. 2 (3x) + 2 (2x) + (x+4) Now, let's simplify the above expression.
2(3x)+2(2x) + (x+4)
6x+4x+(x+4)
11x+4
This resulting linear expression is written in the simplest form. We also want to find the value of the perimeter if x i 3 yards. Let's substitute 3 for x in our linear expression and simplify.
11x+4
11( 3) + 4
33+4
37
When x is 3 yards, the perimeter of the pentagon is 37 yards.
