Let's take a look at this number. 98.99 When rounding to any decimal place, we always look at the digit to the right of the one we want. Rounding decimals to the nearest tenth is the same as rounding to one decimal place. To round to one decimal place, we need to look at the second decimal digit. second decimal digit ↓ 5.6 9 If this digit is less than 5, we round down to the nearest hundredth. Rounding down means that we remove all of the digits to the right of the hundredths place. If the digit is greater than or equal to 5, we round up to the next highest hundredth. Then we remove all of the digits to the right. Next Decimal Digit:& 0,1,2,3,4 → round down Next Decimal Digit:& 5,6,7,8,9 → round up In our case, the digit in the hundredths place is 9.
