Exercise 32 Page 325

To compare two quantities, their units must be the same.

0.4 kilogram

Practice makes perfect

We want to determine which quantity is greater, 14 ounces or 0.4 kilogram. Let's start by expressing 14 ounces in kilograms. 14 oz= kg To do so, we will use the fact that 1 kilogram equals about 35.274 ounces. Let's write this relationship as a unit ratio. 35.274 oz/1kg To perform the conversion, we need to multiply 14 ounces by the unit ratio or its reciprocal. Remember, we want to arrange these ratios such that every unit we do not want gets canceled out and only the units that we want will remain.

14 oz≈ 14 oz * 1kg/35.274 oz
14 oz≈ 14 oz/1 * 1kg/35.274 oz
14 oz≈ 14 oz* 1kg/1* 35.274 oz
14 oz≈ 14 oz* 1kg/1* 35.274 oz
14 oz≈ 14 * 1kg/1* 35.274
14 oz≈ 14kg/35.274
14 oz≈ 14/35.274 kg
14 oz≈ 0.396892... kg
14 oz≈ 0.397 kg

We got that 14 ounces is equal to about 0.397 kilogram. Finally, we can compare the quantities. 0.397kg & < 0.4kg & ↓ 14oz & < 0.4kg Therefore, 0.4 kilogram is more than 14 ounces.
